An Easy Guide to Understanding File Types
There are two basic types of graphics:
1. Vector: These graphics are comprised of points, lines, and fills.
2. Raster: These graphics are made up of dots or pixels on a rectangular grid.

When it comes to large format printing, the primary difference between the two is resolution. A vector graphic can be scaled indefinitely without losing quality. A raster image has a set resolution (dpi or ppi). An image with 300dpi at 8″ x 8″ has a 30 dpi at 80″ x 80″.
